Targeting Porsche’s 911 Turbo, GT3, Audi R8 (V10), Mercedes-AMG GT, and the like, new McLaren Sports Series will have its public debut in second quarter of 2015. New York or Shanghai Auto Show could be the place where the third model in company’s stable, after 650S and P1 hypercar, will break cover.
McLaren stated that new Sports Series model will be a pure McLaren, as it is being built on the credentials of McLaren P1 and 650S. The entry level sportscar will bring Formula 1 technologies and know-how to a totally new segment for the company.
Teaser sent out by McLaren shows a partly camouflaged test mule of Sports Series. It has the looks and likes of a McLaren of course, but only with a magnifying glass one will be able to tell which current model it is based on.
McLaren Sports Series is underpinned by 650S, with some of its carbon fibre chassis borrowed, and also the mid-ship V8 engine. The motor will be de-tuned, to produce about 500 PS. The British sports car manufacturer added that Sports Series will be commute-friendly, with easier ingress & egress, larger cabin and substantial luggage space than 650S.
