2015 Porsche 911 RSR Race Car Spy Shots

Porsche looks to be planning some significant updates for its successful 911 RSR race car for the 2015 motorsport season, as a prototype has just been spotted at the Nürburgring sporting a number of new aerodynamic tweaks. The current RSR based on the Type-991 Porsche 911 was introduced for the 2013 season, competing in the GTE category of the World Endurance Championship, and this new one will likely continue in the WEC, once again with full factory support.

Porsche is also set to introduce a facelift for its road-going 911 next year, making it a Type-991.2, and it’s possible some of the visual tweaks planned for the road car will transfer over to this racing version. It’s hard to tell, though, as this prototype is heavily masked. With the modifications, we can expect downforce to be up and overall balance improved.

It’s also hard to tell what mechanical changes will be taking place. Power in the current RSR comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine that rates at 460 horsepower. The engine is paired with a lightweight sequential gearbox that utilizes paddle shifters on the steering wheel. A similar setup should feature in the updated car.

A debut should take place early next year.
