Review: 2015 Jaguar F-Type R coupe: Fast, Sexy but Not So Silent

If the industry awarded a Best Soundtrack statuette, the 2014 Jaguar F-Type convertible would win handily. For 2015, the F-Type becomes more of a bombshell with the addition of a lithe coupe whose knockout beauty matches the song of its supercharged engine.
Ian Callum, who took his talents from Aston Martin to Jaguar, is among the designers who acknowledge that a well-executed coupe will look better than its convertible counterpart. Taking nothing away from the lovely F-Type convertible, the coupe’s plunging roofline — accentuated by beautifully drawn rear glass — and flared hips give it an unfair advantage.

Fortunately, the F-Type is more than a pretty face. Jaguar says the aluminum-intensive coupe is the most torsionally rigid model in company history, 80 percent stiffer than its open-roof sibling. To increase the strength of the “pillarless” design, which eliminates a roof support bisecting the side glass, a pair of hydroformed aluminum beams span the entire roof arch.
Compared with the heavier, more pliable convertible, the increased core strength has helped to create a notably more athletic, focused performer.
I tested the pick of the litter, the F-Type R coupe, which starts at $90,925. (A pair of supercharged, 3-liter V6 models, with 340 or 380 horsepower, start at a respective $65,925 and $77,925.)
All three Jaguar models sound intimidating, with pushbutton-controlled active exhaust systems. But the V8 is deliciously, almost indescribably, assaultive. The car sounds as if it’s gargling burned gasoline. Crackling, vrooming and backfiring, the Jaguar may prompt calls to your local neighborhood watch, though you can switch off the exhaust button to mute the sound.
An optional panoramic roof ($1,200) doesn’t open, but it creates the illusion of a single piece of glass stretching from behind the windshield to the rear deck. Peer through that glass, and you’ll see the integrated air deflector that rises at 70 m.p.h. to reduce aerodynamic lift by 265 pounds; it tucks away below 50 m.p.h.
All great so far, including flush-mounted handles that pivot out when you unlock the doors. But one year into its run, the F-Type’s cabin looks and feels even more like a pretender. Coupe or convertible, the Jaguar is like a star architect’s big-city hotel: The facade is eye-popping, but inside the actual room there are bare walls and a warm Diet Coke in the minibar.
Stitched leather on the dash hits the right luxury note, as do sport seats with integrated headrests and cool, clear-lensed climate-control knobs.
But other materials and switches give off a plasticky, rubbery vibe. Two of a sports car’s most crucial elements seem like compromises: the bland driver’s gauges and the automatic shifter, a stubby rectangle whose touch yields no pleasure.
And while the Corvette and the Porsche 911 offer 7-speed manual transmissions, the Jaguar has only an 8-speed paddle-shifted automatic, though it is smooth and swift in all facets.
And to its credit, the Jaguar is so vivid, aggressive and desirable that I stopped noticing its cabin blemishes.
On a summer day in the horse country of Dutchess County, N.Y., the F-Type came into its own, hammering and haunting back roads like no Jaguar I’ve driven. Pushed harder at Gingerman Raceway, a charmingly scruffy road course in Western Michigan, the coupe proved it was more than a stylish British fop: Swinging its tail wide under power and using its robust brakes and monumental thrust — almost an unfair advantage — to eke out a lead over a formidable BMW M4 in hot pursuit.
Not surprisingly, the F-Type doesn’t steer as sensitively as a Porsche; few cars do. But history’s most powerful production Jaguar does accelerate more quickly than a 911 S or a Stingray. And with its ability to bomb into curves and howl out again, fully vested in the road-sensing adaptive suspension and brake-based torque vectoring system, the F-Type R would surely claw any rival’s tail on public roads.
Those are things that haven’t been said about a Jaguar since the legendary E-Type of 1961-75.
After 40 years with no two-seater in its lineup — and a long period of corporate slumber — the F-Type R continues Jaguar’s fairy-tale revival. It’s one part beauty, one part beast.

2015 Toyota Camry Review, Specs, Great ...

An all-new 2015 Toyota Camry already? That’s what some current Camry owners might think, as the current generation of this longtime best-selling sedan model has only been around for three model years. Yet today the Camry faces even stronger competition from recently refreshed versions of the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima, and others.
Toyota is in effect not resting on its laurels; it’s given what it calls a sweeping redesign to the Camry for 2015—with a completely new look for the interior and exterior, added noise insulation, and upgraded driving dynamics.
While the change in appearance isn’t radically different, it looks updated, more refined, and more contemporary inside and out. And the most significant change are under the skin. The Camry gets what Toyota calls an aggressive front-end appearance, with LED front running lamps plus available LED auto-leveling lamps for the low and high beams. Taillights get a new design that tapers in with the side sheetmetal, and a ‘decorative garnish’—read chrome bar—runs across the trunk. Toyota calls that cue sporty, although it’s a generic cliche.
The somewhat downmarket look and more ‘chunky’ feel of the outgoing Camry’s dash have been wiped away, with a ‘high-tech’ look for the center stack and a newfound attention to materials and details. Upper dash areas now have soft-touch trims, and the area just ahead of the shift knob gets an enclosed bin for personal electronics, with a USB port and available wireless charging pad (as in the larger Avalon).
In all, it's not quite all-new, but as much so as mid-cycle updates ever get. The 2015 Camry has nearly 2,000 new parts (out of more than 6,000 total, for those who want to contextualize) compared to the 2014 model. Toyota says that everything is new except the roof. Toyota claims to have made some significant changes to improve the Camry’s responsiveness. While the existing MacPherson strut, multi-link rear suspension layout does carry over into the 2015 Camry, a new calibration for the electric power steering and a retuned brake-booster system make the Camry a better-driving car. So should a stiffer body structure and additional spot welds; in the cushy Camry XLE especially, it all adds up to a more sophisticated experience, much like what the Avalon received a couple of years ago; while in the sporty SE and XSE the stiffer body helps make more of it. As well, Toyota has added noise insulation at the floor, improved window and door seals, and redesigned the side mirrors for better airflow.
What’s under the hood carries over, mostly. The 2015 Camry will remain powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or 3.5-liter V-6—both hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission—or in the Hybrid model, a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and Hybrid Synergy Drive system. New to the lineup this year is a new sporty SE version of the Camry Hybrid. Overall, we'd say that the Camry V-6 and Hybrid stand out as enjoyable, engaging cars, considering all the rest of the improvements this model's been given, although the base 178-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine feels lackluster among present-day rivals, as it lacks direct injection or turbocharging—as well as the more.

BMW i8. The interesting thing to know about the BMW i8

1. It's made of old iPhones

The windscreen and windows in the BMW i8 are made from ordinary glass, but the rear window is made of the same chemically hardened glass that smartphones are made from. It's stronger than ordinary glass, so it can be made thinner (hence lighter) and it offers better sound-proofing from the rear-mounted petrol engine.

2. It has laser freakin' headlights

Screw LEDs, the i8's packing lasers, so the next time you get stuck in traffic, you can blast other motorists to oblivion. OK, that last bit's not strictly true. As standard, the BMW i8 comes with nifty LEDs, but BMW also offers lasers as an optional extra. These, it says are 1,000 times brighter than LED headlights but use half the power, reducing electrical draw on the batteries and engine. Now if only they could make a version you could use to cut cyclists in half with. We wouldn't use it for that of course, but it'd be an interesting technical achievement we think you'll agree.

3. It's a 4x4

BMW doesn't recommend you go greenlaning in it, but the i8 is driven by all four wheels. It uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and six-speed automatic gearbox to drive the rear axle, but also has a 131hp, 250Nm electric motor driving the front wheels. Suck on that, Land Rover.

4. It may be electric, but it's incredibly light

Hybrids and electric cars are meant to be heavy, which is the last thing you want in a sports car. Luckily, BMW has worked hard on keeping the i8's kerb weight to a bare minimum. It tips the scales at a very respectable 1,490kg, which on a par with, and in some cases lighter than many sports cars. The Ferrari 458 Italia, for reference, has a kerb weight of 1,485kg. The Aston Martin V12 Vantage, meanwhile, is comparably lardy at 1,680kg. The i8 is even a par with many ordinary petrol and diesel hatchbacks. The Ford Focus, which is no lardarse, weighs between 1,270kg and 1,471kg depending on spec.

5. It's flippin' fast

With the motor and engine working in tandem, the i8 has access to a sizeable 362bhp and 570Nm of torque. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage has more power and less torque (420bhp and 470Nm) but the BMW i8 will do 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds – 0.3 seconds faster than the Aston. AWD should help it corner and grip better, too. Top speed is a very respectable 160mph.

6. It makes the Prius look thirsty

BMW claims the i8 can return 113mpg. An ordinary Toyota Prius is good for a paltry 72mpg. What's more, the i8 can be driven for 22 miles on electric power alone at speeds of up to 75mph, and when you're done you can plug it in and recharge the thing in 3 hours from an ordinary plug socket. Obviously, you don't have to use electricity all the time. Fill the tank with dinosaur juice from your local Shell and it'll travel for 310 miles without stopping.

7. It has bicycle wheels

Not really. But it does have optional carbon wheels, which some high-end bicycles use. These save an impressive 3kg each over the standard, already lightweight, alloy wheels. If you're desperate to eek out a bit more performance, extend your driving range or just fancy splashing a bit more cash, these are a no-brainer.

8. It'll call you an ambulance if you crash it

The BMW i8 is fitted with more tech than you'll know what to do with. Automatic wipers with rain sensors, cameras all around the bodywork to help you park without scuffing the paintwork, pedestrian recognition with automatic braking. It'll even call the emergency services if special accelerometers in the chassis detect a crash.

9. It comes with its own credit card

This one's a lie. But it does come with a ChargeNow card that you can use to pay for electricity without handing any cash over. That's like a credit card, isn't it? Sort of?

10. It's the only car you'll ever need.

The BMW i8 has a price tag of 100,000. That's expensive compared to, say a Ford Fiesta, but it's bloody good value compared to cars that offer similar performance. Sports cars like the V8 Vantage will set you back in the region of £85,000, but then you'll have to splash out on a more sensible car to prevent their running costs making you bankrupt. The BMW i8 on the other hand, offers similar performance to its sports car peers and costs next to nothing to drive. What's not to like?

11. Except the convertible version

Bonus thing! Yup, BMW's also working on a drop top i8, and we want that version even more.

Audi recalling 850,000 A4 models over airbag problems

(Reuters)
* Audi recalls 400,000 A4 in China, Germany
* Faulty Audi airbags not made by Takata -spokesman
* Audi solved problem, adjusted A4 production last week (Adds more detail on airbag problems and background)
BERLIN, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Audi is recalling 850,000 A4 models worldwide due to airbag problems, with about half of the vehicles affected in the luxury carmaker's two biggest markets of China and Germany.
Faulty software in A4 models delivered after 2012 could prevent front airbags from deploying, a spokesman at Audi's Ingolstadt-based headquarters said on Thursday.
Audi said its faulty airbags are not made by Japan's Takata Corp, which is at the centre of a burgeoning number of recalls over air bags that could spray shrapnel at occupants.
Volkswagen -owned Audi is recalling about 250,000 A4 models in China, its biggest market, and 150,000 in Germany, while giving no regional breakdown for the remaining 450,000 cars.
The airbag problem is caused by a software fault, affecting A4 saloons, station wagons and so-called allroad models.
The world's No. 2 luxury-car maker last week adjusted production of A4 models at its German plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm, adding new software.
U.S. safety regulators on Wednesday expanded the number of Takata-equipped vehicles in the United States that may be affected by recalls to 7.8 million vehicles from 10 carmakers.

News of the recall was published earlier on Thursday by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine.

Bentley Mulsanne Speed

For decades now Bentley has been a strong competitor to the likes of Rolls Royce. They offered machines like the Mulsanne that offered ultimate levels of comfort and luxury for the dignitaries, rulers and drug-lords of the world. But then Volkswagen rebadged the Phaeton to create the Continental and things changed forever. Bentley instantly swapped from a boring ho-hum brand of machines for the ultra-rich to a company that offered sporting luxury GT cars like Aston Martin and Maserati Maserati. Then Bentley went and made a faster, better version they dubbed Speed and it was good. Now Bentley is looking to once again inject a bit of speed and excitement into their lineup and they have made a new Speed version of the Mulsanne?!
That is right, Bentley has taken its gigantic luxo-barge and crammed it full of engine and upgraded chassis bits to create the Mulsanne Speed. Despite record levels of power and performance for the brand, Bentley was smart to keep a rather subtle (or as subtle as a giant Bentley can be) exterior design.
Did Bentley just create the ultimate luxury sleeper? Read on to find out all the details and decide for yourself.
Updated 10/03/2014: Bentley unveiled at the 2014 Paris Auto Show the most powerful, fastest Mulsanne ever.

In our rendering, the Mulsanne Speed wears a splitter up front, side skirts, smoked headlamps with black inserts and a dark-black metal mesh grille. We also lowered its stance slightly and topped it off with a ’Speed’ badge on the side.

As with all cars of this level, the exterior design is quite restrained and clean considering its sporting intentions. From the old Mulsanne, Bentley has added a dark finish to the grilles that cover the nose, lower bumper vents and wing vents. If you have a very sharp eye, you will also notice that the headlamps and taillamps are tinted a bit darker as well.
One of the more noticeable changes for the new Bentley Mulsanne Speed is the new set of wheels. These new wheels are directional, a first for Bentley, and are “handed;" meaning they are set for one side of the car or the other. No left-to-right tire rotations here, folks. Expect them to cost a fortune to replace if you ever damage them. Each 21-inch roller is individually machined from solid, forged blanks.
To round out the changes, Bentley has added some nice new rifled exhaust pipes for the upgraded engine and four new paint colors: Spectre, Candy Red, Camel and Marlin. The weird black/gold/green car we have here in our photos is the new Spectre paint.

New Ford Mondeo 2014 US: release date, price and specs

The new Ford Mondeo priced from £20,795. Get all the details on the design, spec and pricing of the new car here

Ford has announced the all-new Mondeo will be priced from £20,795, with first models arriving in showrooms by the end of the year. The car has been highly anticipated, bringing the new Ford family face to the popular saloon model along with a new range of engines and advanced technologies.
There will even be a Ford Mondeo Hybrid, and we've had the chance to drive one - we were impressed with emissions of less than 99g/km of CO2 and over 65mpg fuel economy. However, thanks to the 188bhp provided by the 2.0-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor, it feels very nimble.

Ford Mondeo 2014 price and release date

Ford has just announced prices will kick off from £20,795 for the entry-level model. Prcies for the hybrid and more premium modle sin the Mondeo range have not yet been announced.
There will also be an upmarket and bespoke Ford Mondeo Vignale version, which aims to compete with the more expensive small saloon cars like the BMW 3 Series. This model is expected to demand a substantial price premium over the standard model.
The 2014 Ford Mondeo will get a new 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine, which returns similar horsepower and torque figures to Ford’s current 1.6-litre EcoBoost in its lower state of tune (148bhp and 240Nm respectively), while delivering improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.
The engine is the fifth EcoBoost engine. The range was launched with a 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost in 2009. Ford added the 2.0-litre EcoBoost in 2010; the 1.6-litre EcoBoost in 2011; and last year the three-cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost was launched.
• Ford Mondeo review
The European-spec Mondeo will also get Ford’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine, making it one of the cleanest cars in its class, with CO2 emissions of under 130g/km. The rest of the engine range will be revealed closer to launch, but expect the 2.0 and new 1.5-litre TDCi diesels, plus 1.6 and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrols too.
The new Ford Mondeo will come with the option of two different petrol-electric powertrains: one a traditional hybrid and the other a plug-in hybrid. The latter is known as the Ford Mondeo Energi, while the other will be badged simply Mondeo Hybrid.
The plug-in Energi and Hybrid both share a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, but the Energi boasts a larger battery pack, and will be able to travel on electric power for around 20 miles. The standard Hybrid will only be able to manage a couple of miles, however.
Both systems will produce 185bhp, allowing for 0-62mph in around 8.5 seconds. Expect to see fuel economy of around 60mpg for the Hybrid and well over 100mpg for the Energi.
Six-speed manual gearboxes will be offered as standard, with dual-clutch six-speed Powershift transmissions optional. A diesel model, with an auto gearbox, will be offered with four-wheel drive for the first time.

Ford Mondeo 2014 dimensions, interior and styling

The new Mondeo measures 4,869mm long, 1,852mm wide and 1,476mm tall – about the same size as the current car – but it’s four centimetres lower, meaning it has a much sleeker profile. There are slimmer roof pillars and the bodywork has a smooth, unruffled finish. The 19-inch wheels give the show car plenty of presence, and will be available as an option on the popular Zetec trim level.
The new grille and headlamp arrangement takes inspiration from the Evos concept and signals a new evolution for Ford’s Kinetic design language. Sparkling LED tail-lamps and polished exhausts add a touch of class to the car.
The driver-focused cabin offers upmarket fit and finish, with soft-touch plastics and fabrics on the dash and doors. Seats are supportive, and there’s an oversized centre console, which helps separate the driver from the rest of the cabin. Elsewhere, extra space has been freed up by moving the dash closer to the windscreen and redesigning the seats to make the most of the car’s 2,850mm wheelbase.
The new Mondeo will also feature a host of upmarket accessories and technology, including SYNC, Ford’s Microsoft-developed in-car entertainment system, which streams music to the car’s speakers from your phone and also incorporates Bluetooth and Internet access. The MyFord Touch system will be available too, offering voice control for all major systems.
Driver-assist systems include a lane-keeping, fatigue detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning and active park assist. Safety is also enhanced by inflatable rear seat belts.

New Ford Mondeo Estate

A Mondeo Estate will also be offered, but as release date of the hatchback has been pushed back, it is not expected until 2015.

Ford Mondeo 2014: Lightweight technology revealed

Ford gave us a glimpse in to its lightweight future, with a concept of the new Ford Mondeo that weighs just 1,195kg – that’s about the same as a diesel-powered Fiesta.
Ford managed to shed 363kg of weight from a standard next-gen Mondeo by fitting things like carbon fibre wheels, high-strength steel and aluminium in the chassis and composite springs for the front suspension. These features won't be present on the production car but similar technology will find its way into future Fords.
“Our goal was to investigate how to design and build a mixed-materials, lightweight vehicle that could potentially be produced in high volume, while providing the same level of safety, durability and toughness as our vehicles on the road today,” said Matt Zaluzec, Ford technical leader, Global Materials and Manufacturing Research.
Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development said: “A focus on light-weighting will be fundamental to our industry for years to come, and we are investigating many advanced materials applications as possible solutions for weight reduction in our vehicles.”

2015 New Ferrari F60 America. Ferrari is celebrating 60 years in the USA birthday

Limited edition open-top F12 marks 60 years of Ferrari business in America – and the Ferrari F60 America is already sold out

Ferrari has commemorated 60 years of selling cars in the USA with a striking open-top version of the Ferrari F12, fittingly named the F60 America. Strictly limited to just 10 units exclusively offered to American collectors, the F60 is predictably sold out already, despite its $2.5m (£1.5m) price tag.
Far from simply chopping the roof and pillars from an F12 Berlinetta, the F60 America has seen some interesting re-engineering. Take the front and rear aprons – their appearance has been tweaked from the heavily aero-focused F12, with the front grille now aping the California T’s, and the rear diffuser sprouting new central vanes.
The classic round taillights now bulge out of the aluminium bodywork, whereas the F12’s sit flush in the car’s rump. There are also new side vents, diamond-cut wheels, and a new bonnet which no longer forces airflow down through an aperture in the car’s front wings.
Carbon-fibre-trimmed roll hoops sit atop the rear deck, peering down into Ferrari’s most outlandish interior yet. It’s a two-tone arrangement that swathes the driver’s side in eye-searing red leather and trim, while the passenger has a black bucket seat and surroundings.
The wild look is supposed to hint at the F60’s racing heritage – like the livery and limited production number, the two-tone upholstery is inspired by 1960’s North American Racing Team Ferraris. Lightweight carbon features throughout the two-seat cockpit, while the chairs themselves feature inset American flag logos.
The America is powered by the standard F12’s 6.3-litre V12 and seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which deals out 730bhp to the rear wheels. The acceleration figure remains a pulverising 3.1 seconds from 0-62mph but there’s no word on the outright top speed. Ferrari has at least advised that the supplied fabric roof, which must be erected manually, is only guaranteed to cling onto the F60 up to speeds of 75mph.

The F60 America will be unveiled in Beverley Hills on 11 October 2014, and makes history as the first new Ferrari in 23 years not unveiled under the stewardship of enigmatic ex-chairman Luca di Montezemolo.
